This race is one that is near and dear to my heart. As many of you know, we will be officially opening our conjure shop, Poisoned Path, later this Summer. But, seeing as we have a group ritual that will be cast with a couple of their Sages, we are releasing their information now.

Upon first making contact with the Torni’l (toar-nee-uhl), I was met with curiosity rather than aggression. They were curious how I came across them as they were not used to outsiders making their way to their homeland. Behind their cool demeanor, I came to know the incredible power that they wield that can be used for healing or destruction if the circumstances called for it. The Torni’l are a race of- the best way that I can describe it- phoenix shifters. They have three forms that they take: humanoid with aristocratic features and pale pink skin (some have darker, almost tan skin), a quasi-avian form in which they have talons on their feet and flight feathers protruding from their arms, and their avian form which is a bird that appears to be on fire but is from the reflection of the sun on their feathers. An adult Torni’l ranges from about 6-7’ in height and has a lithe build.

The Torni’l embody balance. Their religion is based on the concept of Spiritual Alchemy. Those initiated into their religious order study this art, becoming masters of it and its many steps leading to a specialization of one of those steps. The way that they practice their Spiritual Alchemy rituals is through immolating themselves in ritual pyres to be reborn. These rituals mark milestones along the path of their lives (reaching adolescence, adulthood, becoming parents, initiations into either the clergy or the healer’s class, or their entrance into becoming an elder). These are a time of celebration and renewal. They act as a rebirth marked with the dissolution of their false beliefs and ingrained patterns that no longer serve them. Their religious hierarchy is headed by a council composed of eight elected officials, each a master of their learning, and one who has mastered all 7 components to Spiritual Alchemy.

This master has a long history in the Torni’l dating back to the earliest incarnation of their organization. Each member used to be proficient in the complete ritual from beginning to end. Over time, they began to specialize in order to better develop their understanding and reverence of the ritual. They started to learn and develop more in-depth processes for each step of the Immolation Ritual, learning all they could about that part and how it feeds into the next part of the ritual. As they began specializing, a select few were chosen in order to keep the tradition of learning the complete ritual alive. This became a tradition. Each class of initiates is closely watched for those who are proficient in their learning and shows skills that speak to their competence in the overall process. They are chosen, at their commencement to their Elder-Mage ceremony to specialize in all aspects of Spiritual Alchemy. This is an exceedingly rare rank to achieve.

heir healers dedicate themselves to studying and learning solar magicks used to aid them in rituals of rejuvenation. They become adepts of either the Fire Sun, Black Sun, or Adepts of the Whole Sun depending on their inclinations, personal balance, and which they resonate with the most. The Fire Sun is like our own sun and the magicks learned are much like our own Solar Magicks that we can harness. The Fire Sun represents the active energies, creativity, physicality, and rejuvenation. The Black Sun is similar to, but not quite, like our moon. Rather than recognizing the lunar energies and thereby differentiating Solar from Lunar, they recognize that the energies of the Black Sun are “dimmed” forms of solar energy. Adepts of the Black Sun become masters at emotional, mental, and more passive forms of magick. Those initiated into the ranks of the Whole Sun, learn a much more balanced approached. These adepts begin to learn the magicks of both suns with the specific emphasis that one cannot achieve true balance without learning both emotional and physical healing- taking a multidisciplinary approach to the psychophysical health of their charges. The healers are overseen by a panel of three sages, each one selected by their predecessor from their school of healing.

There is a rare ritual that is performed by both their clergy and healers in which the focus is bringing together their energies in order to heal those afflicted with a terminal illness or deadly disease which may befall them. This is one of their most sacred rituals that they perform and can only be overseen by the High-Council Mages and the leaders of the Solar Sages. They value the lives of their ‘people’ taking every step to allow them to reach the end of their natural life.
Through their knowledge and education in healing and balancing, they also learn darker arts as well. Where they are masters at bringing the body into equilibrium, they can also- just as adeptly- cause dis-ease within the body. Their execration magick is the direct opposite of their healing magicks. Their education encompasses any and all applications of their magicks. This, in their philosophy, teaches a more in-depth study and why their practices are the way they are.

The Torni’l live in a semi-tropical land, marked by vast, sprawling archipelagos formed from volcanoes. Their temples are built atop the dormant volcanoes that formed their islands. The land is marked by rocky outcropping and lush vegetation, dense meadows, and forests. They adapted to their land, building around the trees and on the ground as they could. Their homes are a testament to this and seamlessly blend into their environment, taking a skilled eye to spot them. Certain islands and parts of the inhabited islands within the archipelagos are uninhabitable, however, as they are currently forming around active volcanoes or they are close enough to where magma flows. A few of their islands have merged over the course of their history, forming continents. The oldest one is their capital. The capital is the center of their culture as it’s where their race first began and where their leaders reside.

They're definitely an amazing race, walking with them and having them around is like standing in direct sunlight. Their avian form is probably my favorite to be around. They look like flaming gold in all honesty.
