*Looks in from a dark and foggy street corner* I know nearly fuck all about Koetting. I remember laughing at the commercialism of his website; while I cannot judge him solely by this, it turns me off.
Given the amalgamation of what I've read between you, and having heard-tell of drug abuse I'd say he's potentially one of those mages that got in a little too deep.. there are many..
Intoxicants or states of intoxication/trance (which can be provoked plenty of ways), are traditionally tied to magick and ritual wherever they can enhance the work or process.
Then on the other end of the spectrum you have mages who were pretty much driven into the Abyss.. this being the cause of irresponsible behaviors leading to things like addiction, sometimes just to hang onto their last thread of sanity or the perception of control.
On the subject of a 'get out of jail free' card.. the reality is we get what we've worked for or are blessed enough to have granted. Most of the time if magick is improving our lives it has to do with our investment in or resonance to the forces we're working with. Magick is a lot about the ability to take our destiny into our own hands. When we understand how to manipulate energy, via our link to the natural world which stimulates and encourages this, we can certainly improve our situation with it. We can get a lot of what we desire with magick if the circumstances align and/or we are skilled magicians; whether it's easy or complex, whether or not we 'should' have it/if it's really what we'd want in the long-run, or where that will lead is quite another matter. Through and through it's really up to you, and your connection.. best in every case to understand the magick you're working, and respect the forces involved.
I'm not here to prove anything, just a thought or two.
